Casa Update 2.9.11

Almost ready for our first open house at the Casa del Sol.

We have a few finishing touches, but are 99% complete. A little nicer weather would be great, but considering the weather everywhere else EXCEPT Florida, we shouldn't complain.

We have started to see green sprouts of life from our recently planted Rye and Argentine Bahia. The Rye will green the yard quickly, but most importantly, hold the Bahia seed untill it germinates.

We put down pine straw in the beds today. Pine straw is considered Florida friendly since we are not taking out Cypress tress to create mulch. The pine straw is abundant from the Ocala Nationsl Forest, and looks great!

Casa del Sol Update 1-26-11

The home is almost complete!!! we are in the process of planting Florida Friendly Landscape with the help from UF-IFAS. If these freeze periods ends, we will be hosting open house Every SATURDAY and SUNDAY from 1-4pm. We are currently working with Marion County Building Industry Association on creating the first and only Green format for the Parade of Homes, which is in April 2-17, 2011. We are also working with UF-IFAS/Sustainability on a SOLAR TOUR for the education of builders and customers.

You can also follow updates about these projects on our Twitter page.

Construction has begun on “Casa del Sol.”  For all of our non-Spanish speaking friends, “House in the Sun.”

At SOLAR TREK, it has long been our belief that solar is for everyone. We want to dispel the misconception that solar is expensive and only for those with the disposable income to afford the upfront costs.

The people most affected by rising utility rates, such as retirees on a fixed income, are the people that need solar the most. By offsetting a portion of your electric bill, you are insulating yourself from future rate increases. Did you know that in Central Florida the rates have increased 4.9% per year for the last 40 years? You can expect your utility bill to double in less than 21 years. That means EVERYONE is a good candidate for solar!

Typical repayment periods for solar are between 2 ½ and 5 years, depending on the household. If you were to quantify the repayment as a R.O.I. (Return On Investment), that would be a 20-40% R.O.I. per year. Will your stock broker GUARANTEE your returns to be greater than 20% per year?

We have purchased a home in the Pine Run Estates, 55+ community in Ocala. We plan to remodel Casa del Sol and make it energy efficient on a very strict budget. We believe the Pine Run community is a great value for the cost. With full time security, clubhouse with pool and tennis courts, and with homeowner fees less than $100. per month; Pine Run fit our project to the T.

It is easy to make the home zero energy but, is it cost effective? The criteria we have selected is that all of the combined energy efficient improvements must have a repayment of 5 years or less. With each improvement we will breakdown the costs, savings, repayment and R.O.I.

Improvements will include;

1.Energy Efficient Roof

2.Energy Efficient Windows

3.Attic Insulation

4.Solar Attic Vent Fan

5.Energy Efficient Heat and Air Conditioning

6.Programmable Thermostat

7.Smartcool Compressor Management System

8.Energy Efficient Lighting

9.Solatube Solar Light Tube

10.Energy Efficient Appliances

11.Solar Domestic Hot Water

12.Hot Water Recirculation System

13.Solar Heater

14.Solar Electric system

Along the way we’ll give you other helpful tips to reduce your energy bills that you can do yourself for little or no cost.

Check back with us often to see the progress. It’s going to be a great project!
